INTEGRATIVE THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES IN POLYCYSTIC OVARY SYNDROME: FROM CONVENTIONAL PHARMACOTHERAPY TO HERBAL INTERVENTIONS
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common multifactorial endocrine disorder affecting 8–13% of women of reproductive age. It is characterized by hyperandrogenism, ovulatory dysfunction, insulin resistance, and metabolic abnormalities. The pathophysiology involves disruption of the hypothalamic–pituitary–ovarian axis, oxidative stress, chronic low-grade inflammation, and genetic and environmental influences. Clinically, PCOS presents with irregular menstruation, hirsutism, acne, obesity, infertility, and increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and psychological disorders. Diagnosis is based on clinical features, biochemical parameters, and ultrasonography after excluding other endocrine conditions.
