A REVIEW ON SORBITOL AS A PHARMACEUTICAL EXCIPIENT
Excipients are essential parts of pharmaceutical formulations. They help ensure the safety, stability, quality, and effectiveness of medicinal products. Sorbitol is a common pharmaceutical excipient that belongs to the polyol group. It is popular because of its sweet taste, non-cariogenic nature, good chemical stability, and high patient acceptability. These properties make sorbitol widely used in both solid and liquid dosage forms. In solid dosage forms, sorbitol mainly acts as a diluent, binder, and sweetening agent. It is particularly effective in chewable tablets, lozenges, and orally disintegrating tablets, where taste masking and mouthfeel are crucial for patient compliance. Sorbitol provides a pleasant cooling sensation and improves flavour, making formulations suitable for both pediatric and geriatric patients. It also supports direct compression techniques and helps to ensure uniform tablet weight, hardness, and dissolution performance. However, because it absorbs moisture, careful formulation and packaging are needed to avoid stability issues. In liquid dosage forms, sorbitol is widely used as a sweetener, humectant, viscosity modifier, and stabilising agent. It is often found in syrups, oral solutions, and suspensions to improve taste and mouthfeel while masking the bitterness of active ingredients. Sorbitol helps maintain product consistency, reduces evaporation, and prevents sugar crystallisation during storage. Its compatibility with many drugs adds to its usefulness in liquid formulations. Overall, sorbitol is a multifunctional and adaptable pharmaceutical excipient with significant applications in solid and liquid dosage forms. Its favourable physicochemical properties, safety profile, and patient-friendly traits make it an important component in modern pharmaceutical formulation development and dosage form design. Its continued use offers formulation flexibility, improves patient adherence, supports regulatory acceptance, and enhances manufacturing processes. This highlights the importance of sorbitol in today's pharmaceutical research, excipient selection, and oral drug delivery system development worldwide.
