THE ROLE OF THE JOURNAL MADHAR MARUMANAM IN WOMEN’S EMANCIPATION
The Tamil journal Madhar Marumanam emerged as a powerful medium of social reform during a crucial phase in South Indian history marked by debates on gender, caste, and modernity. This paper explores the journal’s role in advancing women’s emancipation by examining its ideological stance, thematic concerns, and socio-cultural interventions. Through its advocacy of women’s education, widow remarriage, critique of patriarchy, and promotion of female agency, Madhar Marumanam contributed significantly to reshaping gender discourse in Tamil society. The study situates the journal within the broader framework of print culture and reform movements, highlighting its enduring legacy.
