Abstract
An index number is a statistical device that measures the average change in a group of related variables over two or more situations, typically across time, space, or category. As a tool of research methodology, the index number occupies a unique position: it converts heterogeneous, often non-comparable raw data into a single representative figure that permits meaningful comparison. This article examines the conceptual foundations, classification, and construction methods of index numbers, including simple and weighted aggregative methods, the Laspeyres, Paasche, and Fisher formulae, and the principal tests of adequacy — the time reversal test, the factor reversal test, and the circular test. It further situates index numbers within the broader landscape of quantitative research methodology, considering their use in economic, social, and legal-empirical research, and concludes with a discussion of the limitations and methodological cautions that researchers must observe when constructing and interpreting index numbers.
