Abstract
The Data Encryption Standard (DES) is a symmetric-key block cipher that has been extensively studied in the field of cryptography and remains useful as a legacy algorithm for evaluating cryptographic implementation and performance techniques. Although DES is no longer considered suitable for modern security requirements, its fixed block structure and well-defined operations make it suitable for performance-oriented experimentation. This paper proposes an adaptive execution strategy for DES that dynamically selects between sequential and parallel execution based on the size of the input data and the overhead associated with parallel processing. The proposed approach considers three execution strategies: sequential DES, parallel DES, and adaptive DES. For small input sizes, sequential execution can be preferable because the overhead of creating and coordinating parallel tasks may reduce the performance benefit. For larger input sizes, parallel execution can provide improved processing efficiency by distributing independent data blocks among multiple processing units. The proposed adaptive mechanism estimates the execution conditions and selects the execution strategy expected to provide better performance. The study evaluates the three approaches using different input data sizes and performance metrics including execution time, throughput, speed-up, and parallelization overhead. The observed crossover region was between 100 KB and 1 MB, with a maximum measured speed-up of 3.331× at 50 MB.
