Abstract
Manufacturing firms globally operate under pressure to reduce costs, improve quality, and ensure safety. While technology and capital are critical, employee productivity and retention remain decisive for competitive advantage. This paper examines how organisational culture influences these two outcomes in manufacturing firms. Grounded in Schein’s (2010) model and Cameron and Quinn’s (2011) Competing Values Framework, the study synthesizes literature and presents two case studies from Indian manufacturing: Tata Steel and Maruti Suzuki. Findings show that cultures balancing hierarchy for compliance, clan for engagement, and safety orientation for well-being lead to higher productivity and lower turnover. The paper concludes with strategic recommendations for HR and operations leaders.
