Abstract
The rapid digitalization of India's retail landscape has fundamentally altered consumer shopping behavior, particularly in tier-2 cities like Bhopal. This empirical study investigates the factors influencing consumer preferences between online and offline shopping channels among residents of Bhopal city. Using a quantitative research design with structured questionnaires administered to 250 respondents across diverse demographic segments, the research identifies key determinants including convenience, price sensitivity, product tangibility, trust, and experiential value. Findings reveal that while 58% of consumers demonstrate a preference for offline shopping due to the ability to physically examine products and immediate possession, 42% favor online channels for convenience, competitive pricing, and wider product variety. Notably, 67% of respondents exhibit omnichannel behavior, strategically combining both channels based on product category and purchase context. The study contributes to retail theory by validating a hybrid consumption model in India's emerging urban markets and provides actionable insights for retailers seeking to optimize omnichannel strategies in tier-2 cities.
