Abstract
Large institutional equity orders require simultaneous decisions regarding execution timing, venue allocation, liquidity, transaction costs and market impact. This paper develops a Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows (VRPTW) inspired optimization framework, integrating these decisions within a unified operations research model. The proposed model represents the execution horizon as a time expanded network in which child order execution units are allocated across trading venues and time periods subject to capacity, liquidity, time window and flow constraints. The objective function incorporates venue transaction costs, switching costs, a convex market impact component and a penalty for deviations from a target execution schedule. This study combines mathematical modeling and computational implementation in Python to evaluate the proposed framework and demonstrates how an operations research framework can integrate when to execute, where to execute and how much to execute within a single equity execution model.
